It took me far longer to read this than it should have, especially considering it's not a very long book. I think that's because I just never felt involved with the story. Once I set it down, it was easy enough to leave it sitting there, although when I'd pick it up again it was enjoyable enough.
I still really like the idea of a medieval sleuth, but this just didn't hit the spot for me. Nov 07, Simon Mcleish rated it it was ok. Originally published on my blog here in April The medieval town of Melford is a dangerous place for young women. A serial killer is stalking the lanes around the town, which has grown quickly from a village after local farming has changed to the profitable business of sheep rearing.

Sir Robert's son petitioned the king for an investigation and maybe a pardon, and when the killings start up again the king's clerk Sir Hugh Corbett is sent to Melford to find out the truth. In many ways The Treason of the Ghosts is not quite typical of the series of novels in which Corbett is the detective.
It is as meticulously researched as ever, but the fact that there is more plot than usual with a large number of murders requiring simultaneous investigation leaves less room for the evocation of background which is one of the principal merits of the series. Like many of Doherty's novels, particularly those written as Paul Harding, this one contains a locked room mystery, but it is only perfunctory and easily solved in a few pages.
It is in fact quite easy to work out who the murderer is, with Corbett ignoring some very obvious leads. The poorer plot and lack of background make The Treason of the Ghosts one of the least successful novels in the series. Sep 22, Stephanie rated it really liked it. The Hugh Corbett series by Paul Doherty is a strong historical crime series. The author's knowledge of history provides a realistic feeling to the time period, but the crime element is also tightly plotted.
This is a really interesting story, in my opinion, dealing as it does with a serial killer, something perhaps more common in contemporary crime fiction than historical. However, the historical twist works really well, taking advantage of the almost claustrophobic feel of small medieval towns The Hugh Corbett series by Paul Doherty is a strong historical crime series. Sep 24, Jim McPherson rated it really liked it. Doherty doesn't seem to write Corbin mysteries any more. Which is a shame since he has a real affinity for the era. This book is of a type. There's a locked room mystery and some narrow escapes for protagonists. As per usual with mysteries, one needs to suspend disbelief even more so than with SciFi or Fantasy but Doherty does give reader a fair chance at arriving at solution before denouement, which is most many ask.
Whole series worth a read, all the more so since it doesn't use first person n Doherty doesn't seem to write Corbin mysteries any more. Whole series worth a read, all the more so since it doesn't use first person narrative. That ruins too many of his other series, as it does virtually every action-oriented book.
The Treason of the Ghosts (Hugh Corbett Mysteries, Book 12)
Feb 16, Tracey Allen at Carpe Librum rated it it was ok. This is the eleventh book in Doherty's series featuring the medieval sleuth Hugh Corbett. Whilst I enjoyed this mystery set in the small town of Melford, it lacked the political intrigue of the court that I've enjoyed in previous novels. It also included too much reflection on the details of the murders by Hugh Corbett that has the potential to become tedious in parts.
As I draw nearer to the end of this series though, I can't imagine not reading through to the end. There are 5 more in the series This is the eleventh book in Doherty's series featuring the medieval sleuth Hugh Corbett. There are 5 more in the series to go, so look out for the next installment! I do hope it's better than this one. Dec 31, henrys-axe rated it it was amazing.
The Treason of the Ghosts
I cannot get enough of Paul Doherty's many offerings within the genre. There is always a great plot and continual character development as the series advances. The Treason of the Ghosts has Corbett and his two aides investigating a series of brutal murders in a dual plot involving serial killings and official corruption and misconduct. It's too bad a century separates Hugh Corbett and another Doherty series character, Brother Athelstan. That would certainly be an explosive novel. Apr 16, Julia rated it liked it Shelves: list , mystery , reread.
The Treason of the Ghosts certainly kept me up at night, if that is any recommendation. And when I did put it down to go to sleep, it was scary enough that I made sure the covers were pulled up well above my head! I won't reread it again, but I might look for more books in the series. Hugh Corbett seems like an interesting character to follow. Jan 13, John Lee rated it really liked it.
It was a lucky coincidence that this book followed the one I had most recently read as it was an instinctive grab when I saw it on the library shelf. This is another most enjoyable read in this consistently good series.
Even after reading so many, I have still not got the murderer before Sir Hugh unmasks him. May 28, Donna rated it liked it Shelves: historical-mystery. Another good book in the series bringing the horrors of a modern crime spree to 14th century England. This was a hard book to find; none of the libraries in the system owned it. Perhaps it was only published in England?
Jan 05, Eunira rated it liked it. Very interesting read about medieval England, very vivid descriptions of smells, superstition, habits. Excellent Another excellent book. Always well plotted, a solution that keeps you guessing till the end and wonderfully created characters mingled with real historical figures. Apr 04, Dominic McLoughlin rated it liked it Shelves: historical-fiction. Another good murder mystery in a small medieval town. I enjoy the political aspects of these books and there was less in thhis one compared to others.
